Lead your English teacher resume with level and board

English vacancies in India range from primary language teachers to PGTs preparing ISC or CBSE Class XII students, and schools shortlist on that fit first. State your level (PRT, TGT or PGT), the boards you have taught (CBSE, ICSE/ISC, IB, Cambridge or a state board) and how many board batches you have handled. A PGT post usually needs a postgraduate degree in English plus B.Ed., so show both clearly in Education.

If you also teach spoken English, communicative English or functional grammar, say so. International and premium schools often want teachers who can run speaking assessments, while board schools focus on literature and composition marks.

Proving results in literature and writing

Every English teacher "teaches grammar, prose and poetry", so that line will not help you. Show what improved because of your teaching.

  • Weak: "Taught English literature to senior classes."
  • Strong: "ISC English batch average rose from 78% to 86% over four board cycles."
  • Strong: "Ran a timed essay clinic for 35 weak writers a year; 31 scored above 70% in boards."

Reading programmes, school magazines, library hours, book clubs, elocution and MUN are natural achievements for English teachers. Pick two or three that you led yourself and give one number for each, such as participants, events or prizes. If you have been HOD, mention team size, question-paper setting and moderation work.

Small mistakes that hurt an English teacher application

An English teacher's resume is judged on its language more strictly than any other subject. One spelling slip or a clumsy sentence in your summary can cost you the interview. Read the resume aloud, check tense consistency in your bullets and avoid over-decorated vocabulary.

Other common problems:

  • Copying the job advert ("excellent communication skills") without evidence.
  • Listing every workshop attended instead of two or three relevant ones, such as CBSE capacity-building programmes, NPTEL courses or a CELTA if you really hold it.
  • Forgetting eligibility: CTET Paper II, state TET, or UGC NET/SET if you are also applying to colleges.

Freshers should put their B.Ed. internship, demo lessons and any spoken-English tutoring first. See how a TGT profile is set out in our teacher resume example.

Format and template for teaching resumes

Schools and colleges in India still read many resumes on paper or as printed PDFs, so a clean, traditional layout works better than heavy colour or graphics. Use clear headings such as Summary, Teaching Experience, Education, Eligibility and Certifications, Skills and Co-curricular Activities.

Put the facts a principal checks first near the top: the classes you teach (pre-primary, PRT, TGT or PGT), your subject, and the boards you know, such as CBSE, ICSE/ISC, IB, Cambridge or a state board. List B.Ed., D.El.Ed., B.P.Ed. or NTT clearly, along with CTET, state TET, UGC NET or SET results and the year you qualified. Mention demo classes, smart-class tools and board results only with real numbers.

Keep the resume to one page for freshers and two pages for experienced teachers. A photo is optional unless the school format asks for one. Compare your draft with our teacher resume example before you send it.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, if you taught the batch yourself. Give the class, board and average or pass percentage, and keep the figures honest because schools can check them.
It can help for international schools, language institutes and spoken-English roles. For CBSE or state board schools, B.Ed. and CTET or TET carry more weight.
