Show your music training and instruments clearly

Schools hiring a music teacher want to know your tradition, instruments and level of training before anything else. Say whether you teach Hindustani or Carnatic vocal, Western music, or a mix, and list the instruments you can teach, such as keyboard, harmonium, tabla, guitar or violin.

Give formal qualifications: a B.Music or M.Music, Sangeet Visharad from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Sangeet Prabhakar from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, state board music exams, or Trinity and ABRSM grades. Mention your guru or gharana briefly only if it is meaningful to the school. A line such as "Carnatic vocal, Vidwath level, Trinity Grade 8 keyboard" lets a principal see your range instantly.

Turning concerts and choirs into music teacher achievements

Music teachers are often judged by what the school sees on stage. Use numbers to show the scale and quality of your work.

  • Weak: "Taught music and conducted programmes."
  • Strong: "Lead a 60-member choir that won first place at two inter-school festivals in 2024."
  • Strong: "Prepared 34 students for Trinity keyboard exams; all passed, 21 with merit or distinction."

Annual day productions, assembly songs, school band, competitions, inter-house events and recordings for school videos are all valid achievements. If you have built a music room, chosen instruments or introduced software such as MuseScore or GarageBand, add it. International schools also value experience with IB or Cambridge music frameworks.

Music teacher resume mistakes and the practical audition

Most schools will ask you to sing or play and to teach a short song to a group of children. Use the resume to set up that audition: list the age groups you are best with and the kind of repertoire you teach, such as patriotic songs, bhajans, folk songs or Western choir pieces.

Your own performance career belongs on the resume only in a short "Performances" line, such as concerts, AIR or Doordarshan programmes, or festival appearances. Keep the focus on teaching.

Common mistakes:

  • Listing every raga or song you know instead of what you teach.
  • No class levels, group sizes or student results.
  • Missing certificate years or the issuing body for music exams.

A clean, formal layout prints well for school interviews; avoid decorative fonts that look like a concert poster.

Format and template for teaching resumes

Schools and colleges in India still read many resumes on paper or as printed PDFs, so a clean, traditional layout works better than heavy colour or graphics. Use clear headings such as Summary, Teaching Experience, Education, Eligibility and Certifications, Skills and Co-curricular Activities.

Put the facts a principal checks first near the top: the classes you teach (pre-primary, PRT, TGT or PGT), your subject, and the boards you know, such as CBSE, ICSE/ISC, IB, Cambridge or a state board. List B.Ed., D.El.Ed., B.P.Ed. or NTT clearly, along with CTET, state TET, UGC NET or SET results and the year you qualified. Mention demo classes, smart-class tools and board results only with real numbers.

Keep the resume to one page for freshers and two pages for experienced teachers. A photo is optional unless the school format asks for one. Compare your draft with our teacher resume example before you send it.
