What schools look for in a primary teacher resume

Principals hiring a PRT want to know three things fast: which classes you have taught, whether you are eligible (D.El.Ed. or B.Ed. plus CTET Paper I or the state TET), and how you handle young children. Put all three in the first lines. "Primary teacher with 5 years in Classes I to V, CTET Paper I qualified, focused on phonics and play-way maths" is far stronger than "Passionate teacher who loves children".

Name the board (CBSE, ICSE or your state board) and the subjects you handle, such as English, EVS, Hindi or Mathematics. Many primary vacancies are for class teachers, so mention it if you have been responsible for a whole section, its attendance, report cards and parent meetings.

Showing foundational literacy and numeracy results

Since NEP 2020 and the NIPUN Bharat mission, schools care a lot about foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN). Your bullets should show that children in your class actually learned to read and count better, not just that you "taught English and Maths".

  • Weak: "Responsible for teaching Class III students."
  • Strong: "Raised fluent grade-level readers in Class III from 54% to 83% in one session through daily phonics groups."
  • Strong: "Ran a 6-week bridge course for 22 children who were behind in number sense after school reopened."

Numbers do not have to be large. Reading levels, test averages, worksheet completion and the number of children supported in remedial groups are all believable. Teaching aids you made, a reading corner or a maths lab are also worth one line each.

Primary teacher resume tips for freshers and returning teachers

If you are a fresher, list your B.Ed. or D.El.Ed. internship as experience: the school, the classes you taught, the number of lessons delivered and any teaching aids you prepared. Add your CTET or TET score card year, and mention a demo class if you have done one for the school.

Teachers returning after a career break should state the gap briefly and show what kept them current, such as DIKSHA courses, tuition classes at home or volunteering with an NGO learning centre.

Common mistakes on primary teacher resumes:

  • Listing personal details like religion, caste and father's name instead of classroom evidence.
  • Writing long paragraphs about "love for children" with no examples.
  • Leaving out child-safety, first-aid or POCSO awareness training, which many schools now ask about.

Keep it to one or two pages in a simple, readable format.

Format and template for teaching resumes

Schools and colleges in India still read many resumes on paper or as printed PDFs, so a clean, traditional layout works better than heavy colour or graphics. Use clear headings such as Summary, Teaching Experience, Education, Eligibility and Certifications, Skills and Co-curricular Activities.

Put the facts a principal checks first near the top: the classes you teach (pre-primary, PRT, TGT or PGT), your subject, and the boards you know, such as CBSE, ICSE/ISC, IB, Cambridge or a state board. List B.Ed., D.El.Ed., B.P.Ed. or NTT clearly, along with CTET, state TET, UGC NET or SET results and the year you qualified. Mention demo classes, smart-class tools and board results only with real numbers.

Keep the resume to one page for freshers and two pages for experienced teachers. A photo is optional unless the school format asks for one. Compare your draft with our teacher resume example before you send it.

Frequently asked questions

Central government schools such as KVs require CTET Paper I, and most CBSE private schools prefer it. State government schools ask for the state TET, so mention whichever eligibility test you have cleared with the year.
Rules differ between states and court rulings, and many state schools now prefer D.El.Ed. for Classes I to V. Private schools often accept B.Ed. graduates, so check the vacancy notice and list your qualification clearly.
A photo is optional. Add one only if the school asks for it or its application format includes a photo box.
