What schools want from a physical education teacher

School heads hiring a PE teacher want two people in one: a teacher who can handle PT periods, theory classes and discipline for hundreds of students, and a coach who can win at district, state and SGFI competitions. Your resume should show both.

In your summary, give your qualification (B.P.Ed., M.P.Ed. or D.P.Ed.), years of experience, the sports you coach and your own playing level. "Former state-level wrestler" or "university athletics medallist" carries real weight in sports hiring. If you also teach CBSE Physical Education theory for Classes XI and XII, mention it, since many schools now want a PGT who can deliver board results in the subject.

Coaching results and fitness numbers that stand out

Medals and selections are your strongest bullets, so be specific about level and year.

  • Weak: "Trained students in various sports."
  • Strong: "Coached wrestling and kabaddi squads to 11 state medals; 2 students reached the SGFI nationals in 2024–25."
  • Strong: "Built an athletics team from scratch; 6 students reached district finals within two seasons."

Fitness work matters under NEP 2020 and Fit India. Mention fitness assessments, the number of students tested, yoga or wellness programmes, and any improvement you tracked. Event management is another strength: annual sports meets, inter-house leagues, hosting cluster or zonal tournaments, and coordinating with referees and transport. Include ground and equipment management if you handle a budget or inventory.

PE teacher certifications, safety and common gaps

Coaching certificates from NIS Patiala or a national sports federation, referee or umpire licences, lifeguard training and yoga certification all strengthen a PE resume. Add first aid and basic life support training, because schools hold PE teachers responsible for injuries on the field.

For government and state schools, list the relevant TET or recruitment eligibility, such as HTET or the state PTI exam, with the year.

Freshers should use their B.P.Ed. teaching practice, university or state sports participation and any coaching at summer camps or academies.

Common mistakes:

  • Listing every sport you have ever played instead of those you can coach.
  • No proof of achievements: always give level, event and year.
  • Ignoring theory teaching and assessment skills, which senior school posts need.

A one-page, clean resume from our professional templates is enough for most PE roles.

Format and template for teaching resumes

Schools and colleges in India still read many resumes on paper or as printed PDFs, so a clean, traditional layout works better than heavy colour or graphics. Use clear headings such as Summary, Teaching Experience, Education, Eligibility and Certifications, Skills and Co-curricular Activities.

Put the facts a principal checks first near the top: the classes you teach (pre-primary, PRT, TGT or PGT), your subject, and the boards you know, such as CBSE, ICSE/ISC, IB, Cambridge or a state board. List B.Ed., D.El.Ed., B.P.Ed. or NTT clearly, along with CTET, state TET, UGC NET or SET results and the year you qualified. Mention demo classes, smart-class tools and board results only with real numbers.

Keep the resume to one page for freshers and two pages for experienced teachers. A photo is optional unless the school format asks for one. Compare your draft with our teacher resume example before you send it.
