What CA firms look for in an articleship resume

Partners and managers at CA firms receive many articleship applications after every ICAI result, and most resumes look identical. They check your exam record first: CA Foundation and Intermediate marks, whether you cleared in the first attempt, and whether ICITSS is complete so that you can start immediately. Put these at the top of the education section with marks out of the total.

Then they look for practical readiness. A student who can post entries in Tally, understands GST returns and has seen an income tax filing will be productive within weeks. Share your Student Registration Number (SRN) only when the firm asks for it in its application form.

Showing practical skills before your articleship starts

You do not have work experience yet, so show initiative instead:

• Practise a full year of accounts in TallyPrime and prepare final accounts.
• Prepare GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B summaries from sample data and reconcile input tax credit.
• Help family or neighbours file simple ITRs under a practising CA's guidance.

Describe these as projects with numbers. Interviewers at mid-size firms often ask you to pass entries, explain reverse charge or calculate TDS on a sample payment, so revise the basics from your Intermediate syllabus. Mention Excel skills such as VLOOKUP and pivot tables too, because audit teams rely on them for sampling and working papers.

Choosing a CA firm and tailoring your articleship application

Under the current ICAI scheme, articleship is a two-year practical training period, so pick a firm whose work matches your goals. Large firms offer big statutory audits and structured training; mid-size and smaller firms usually give wider exposure to GST, income tax, tax audit, ROC compliance and bank audits. Check the latest ICAI rules on eligibility, stipend and leave before you apply.

Adjust your summary for each firm: stress audit for audit-heavy firms and taxation for tax practices. Keep the resume to one page, include your Class 12 marks and graduation status, and avoid generic lines about being a team player. Format and template for fresher resumes

Recruiters at campus drives and on Naukri spend only a few seconds on a fresher resume, so keep it to one page. Because you have little or no work history, put Education right after a two-line summary: degree, college, university, year and CGPA or percentage, followed by Class 12 and Class 10 rows with board and marks. Many Indian employers still screen on a 60% or 6.0 CGPA cut-off across 10th, 12th and graduation, so missing marks look like you are hiding something.

Next come Projects and Internships, which is where you prove skills. Give each project a title, your role, the tools used and one measurable result. Then add certifications (NPTEL, Tally, NSDC, Google), skills, achievements and languages.
