The best resume format for students is a one-page, single-column layout in this order: contact details, a two-line objective, education, skills, projects, internships or training, achievements and activities, and certifications. Education comes near the top because it is your strongest qualification today; projects and activities then show what you can actually do with it.

This format works for internship applications, campus placements and your first off-campus job applications.

Student resume section order

1. Contact details. Name, phone, a professional email, city, and a LinkedIn or GitHub link if you have one. You do not need a photo, date of birth or full address.

2. Objective (2 lines). Your degree, the role you want and one strength with proof. Example: "Final-year BTech (Computer Science) student seeking a software developer internship. Built a college attendance app used by 400 students."

3. Education. Current degree with college, expected graduation year and CGPA or percentage. Add class 12 and class 10 with board, year and score below it.

4. Skills. Hard skills and tools only, grouped if helpful: programming languages, software, lab techniques or accounting tools. Leave soft skills for your bullets, where you can prove them.

5. Projects. Two or three academic or personal projects. For each: what you made, the tools you used and a result or scale.

6. Internships and training. Company or organisation, dates and two or three bullets. Industrial training, virtual internships and summer projects all count.

7. Achievements and activities. Hackathons, competitions, ranks, NSS or NCC, college fest roles and club leadership, each with a line on what you did.

8. Certifications. Relevant online courses with the platform and year.

What to write when you have no work experience

Every student starts here. Replace "experience" with evidence from college:

  • A final-year or mini project, written like a job: what problem it solved and how.
  • A role in a club or fest: "Managed a ₹1.2 lakh sponsorship budget for the annual tech fest with a team of six."
  • Teaching or tutoring: "Tutored four class 10 students in maths; all scored above 85% in boards."
  • Freelance or family-business work: "Managed GST invoices and stock records in Tally for a family hardware shop during summer holidays."

The resume with no experience guide has more ideas and sample bullets.

Tips by degree

BTech and engineering students. Put technical skills and projects high on the page, add a GitHub link and mention your branch clearly. The BTech fresher resume guide and the BTech fresher resume sample show a complete version.

BCom and BBA students. Highlight Tally, GST, Excel and any articleship, internship or family-business experience. See the BCom fresher resume example and BBA fresher resume example.

BSc, BCA and other degrees. Lead with lab or software skills and projects. The BCA fresher and BSc fresher examples are good starting points.

Mistakes students should avoid

  • Going beyond one page; recruiters do not need your school activities from class 6.
  • A generic objective such as "to work in a reputed organisation"; name the role and a strength.
  • Listing every subject you studied as a skill.
  • Using a decorative template with photos and charts for portal applications.
  • Spelling mistakes in your name, email or college name; read it aloud before you send it.
